You would think that if you had parasites living in your body, or if you were dealing with toxins like heavy metals or chemicals, that you would “know”. The signs would be obvious, right?

Not so.

In fact, sometimes you can have a symptom—or even a slew of them—that seem related to a specific condition or health issue, but they can actually be caused by either parasites or toxins… or both. Worse, toxins and parasites can be silently affecting your body for years, while causing real damage.

In this article, we’ll explore the primary reasons why parasites and toxins are a concern, as well as how to know if you’re dealing with them.

Parasites

Again, you would expect that it would be obvious if you had creatures living inside your body and feeding off of you. But parasites are most often very tiny, and very stealthy by design. Their job is to survive and procreate, so they don’t want you to know they are there. That’s one main reason why you can have parasites and not know it.

You may also believe that parasites are only a problem in developing countries. So if you haven’t traveled there, it’s not an issue for you.

That is also incorrect. Parasites are very common in North America, and extremely easy to get.

While there are many different kinds of parasites, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently brought attention to what it calls five “neglected parasite infections.” They are are especially damaging because they are most often not caught until “it’s too late.”

Here are some stats on the CDC’s 5 Neglected Parasite Infections (NPIs):

  • Trypanosoma cruzi (the parasite that causes Chagas disease) - 300,000+ Americans infected

  • Cysticercosis - At least 1,000 hospitalizations for symptomatic cysticercosis in the United States, per year

  • Toxocara - More than 14 percent of the U.S. population has been exposed to Toxocara, the parasite that causes toxocariasis. Sadly, at least 70 people—mostly children—are blinded by the resulting eye disease, each year.

  • Trichomonas - Affects 3.7 million people in the United States

  • Toxoplasma gondii (the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis) - 60 million+ people in the United States are chronically infected with Toxoplasma gondii.

20 Health Problems Parasites Can Cause

Let’s look at just some of the health problems parasites can create

  1. Anemia

  2. Insomnia

  3. Skin issues

  4. Puncture intestinal walls (leading to or worsening leaky gut)

  5. Connected to thyroid issues, like Hashimoto’s and Graves’

  6. Fatigue

  7. IBS symptoms like gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, pain

  8. Food sensitivities

  9. Respiratory problems (cough, shortness of breath)

  10. Vitamin deficiency

  11. Nausea

  12. Damage to T-Cells (affecting immune response)

  13. Loss of appetite

  14. Mood swings

  15. Anxiety

  16. Depression

  17. Damage liver

  18. Intestinal blockage

  19. Cysts that can lodge anywhere, including in the spine and brain

  20. Affect eyesight

  21. Infections that can lead to more serious health problems, including blindness, seizures, heart failure, pregnancy complications, and even death

How Do You Get Parasites?

Unfortunately, it’s quite easy to get infected by parasites through:

  • Undercooked meat (beef, pork, fish)

  • Improperly washed fruits and vegetables

  • Contaminated water

  • Contact with contaminated soil or sand

  • Inadvertently consuming contaminated soil

  • Contact with contaminated feces (animal or human)

  • Poor hygiene or sanitation

Mainly, it comes down to hygiene. But, you can’t always be in full control of that. For example, when eating out at a restaurant. You have no control over the hygiene of your food handlers or the food preparation methods in these situations.

Likewise, you have little control over what your child is touching, ingesting, or playing with while at school or on the playground. Children are particularly susceptible, and also likely to pass parasites on to their family.

There are places in the world where parasites are rampant. Often, this is due to differing sanitation practices and hygiene standards. If you travel, you are more at risk.

If you garden, you are also at risk. Soil can contain multiple sources for parasites. These can become ingested by way of improperly washed hands or by handling and eating fresh produce.

Before we get into how you know if you have parasites, let’s take a look at how damaging unknown toxins can be to your body.

Hidden Dangers of Toxins (Toxic Overload) in Your Body

It’s nearly impossible to avoid exposure to toxins in your daily life — they’re found in just about everything, including soaps, cosmetics, food, and the environment.

Common sources of toxins are pesticides on or in fresh produce, in preservatives and other chemicals in prepared foods, household cleaners, hair and hygiene products, plastics, detergents, lotions, pollution, contaminated water, molds, furniture, building materials, paint, fast food, occupational hazards… it’s a long, long list.

In fact, there are 595 chemicals listed on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s)“Toxics Release Inventory”. That list represents 595 chemicals that are proven to have negative effects on your health, including the potential to lead to disease.

Our body has a really efficient way of detoxifying itself, in ideal conditions. However, when toxins build up, it can overload your system and make it much more difficult.

Even without an overload, toxins create a stress response that can gradually weaken your immune system. An increase in toxins can cause your kidneys and liver stress as they work hard to clear them from your body, but even chronic, low-level doses of toxins can affect you in ways you don’t realize.

19 Health Problems Toxins Can Create

The negative health effects of toxins and toxic buildup include:

  1. Skin Issues: such as rashes, acne, eczema, and puffy eyes

  2. Damage to cellular function

  3. Impacting DNA behavior/expression

  4. Body odor

  5. Excessive or sudden sweating

  6. Fatigue / Feeling run down

  7. Low energy levels

  8. Constipation

  9. Insomnia

  10. Bad breath

  11. Hair loss (in extreme cases)

  12. Hormonal changes

  13. Weight fluctuations

  14. Mood swings

  15. Muscle pain and spasms

  16. Joint pain

  17. Migraines

  18. Brain fog

  19. Nutrient imbalances

How Do You Know If You Have Parasites or Toxic Overload?

If you have one or many of the conditions listed above… You very well may be dealing with parasites, toxins, or both. Those symptoms would be your first clue.

Another thing to realize is that parasites themselves can release toxins into your body. This alone can add stress to your liver and your body’s other natural detoxification processes. So if you have parasites, you have at least a small level of toxins causing stress to and disrupting your body’s function and health.

Autoimmune issues and inflammation have been found to have roots in toxic build-up. Parasites are sometimes indicated, as well. Remove the parasites, clear out the toxic build-up in your body and colon, and unresolved health issues sometimes disappear.

Aside from scanning the list of health issues above, some additional, obvious symptoms of parasites include:

  • Gas and bloating

  • Fatigue

  • Itching

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Abdominal pain and tenderness

  • Diarrhea

  • Vomiting and/or nausea

  • Finding a worm in your stool

Additional signs your body is trying to rid itself of toxins include:

  • Offensive urine odor

  • Grinding your jaw at night

  • Smell sensitivity (reacting strongly to certain smells)

  • Sudden cognitive problems

What To Do Next

You’ve probably noticed that the list of health conditions that parasites and toxins can create have a lot of overlap. Plus many of those conditions are often blamed on other things and treated as separate symptoms, not holistically taking the whole body into consideration. So, you get prescribed something to sleep better, or for anxiety, and now you have more chemicals running around your body, and no solution to the root cause.

In some cases, you can get lucky and find a great physician who will treat the whole person, and accurately test you for parasites and toxins. Unfortunately, that is rare. PLUS, such testing is famous for giving false negatives. Meanwhile, health problems continue, and you can easily get frustrated not knowing for sure what’s wrong!

To take matters into your own hands…

As the first line of defense, you might consider lifestyle changes. These would include changes to your environment and diet:

  • Decreasing overall exposure

  • Adding air and water purification systems

  • Stopping the use of harsh chemicals

  • Switching to healthier cosmetics

  • Eating organic fresh produce

  • Consuming organic meat and dairy

  • Exercising more
