What is colon cleansing? And how do you know if you need a colon cleanse?

Sometimes a colon cleanse is recommended by a natural health practitioner, or required for a medical procedure. Other times you may be looking for the benefits of detoxification, and relief from conditions such as:

  • Gas

  • Bloating

  • IBS

  • Defecation disorder

  • Incontinence

  • Weakened immune systems

  • Fatigue

  • Low Energy

  • Diarrhea

  • Constipation

  • Gut (microbiome) imbalance

  • Allergies

  • Constipation

  • Ovarian cysts

  • Acne

  • Intestinal inflammation

  • Abdominal cramps or pain

The tradition of colon cleansing has been around for thousands of years, dating back to Egyptian times.

A professional colon cleanse is water-based. These types of colon cleansing are also known as a colonic, or colonic irrigation. They involve a tube being inserted into your rectum, and your colon being flushed with up to 16 gallons of water!

Often other things are often added to the water, such as coffee, teas, herbs, and more.

Dangers of Water Colonics (Colon Cleanses)

Besides being as unappetizing of a procedure as it sounds (and an expensive one $50+ a pop)…

These types of water colon cleanses can actually be harmful to you. According to the Mayo Clinic, coffee used in colon cleansing has been linked to several deaths.

That is an extreme, of course. However, side effects from colonic procedures do range from mild to severe.

Side effects can include:

  • Kidney failure

  • Allergic reaction

  • Bloating

  • Cramping

  • Dehydration

  • Depletion of healthy gut bacteria

  • Diarrhea

  • Dizziness

  • Nausea

  • Rectal tears

  • Vomiting

  • Infection

  • Electrolyte imbalances

But, since there are so many conditions that can find relief from colon cleansing…

Is there a way to have a colon cleanse without all the risks of a colonic?

Plant-Based Colon Cleanses

Yes. A common alternative to a water-fueled colon cleanse is a plant-based or herbal preparation. There are many, many options on the market that claim to help, but the one vital point that most of these concoctions miss…

Properly cleansing your colon requires more than just purging your bowels. Unfortunately, an intense laxative effect (cathartic) is the most you can expect from most colon cleanse formulas.

Sitting on the toilet all day is 1) no fun and 2) not going to help you much if you don’t correct the problems that created the need to clean out your colon in the first place. You need more than a collection of herbs that are really simple laxatives.

A better strategy is to find a comprehensive system to yes, clean out your bowels, but also to help RESTORE your entire digestive system.

There are 5 things you need a quality plant-based colon cleanse to do:

  1. Clean  - Clear out anything in your colon that shouldn’t be there. Think  hardened stool, mucus, or even parasites. Parasites can be lurking and creating both toxins and adding to your health issues.

  2. Detoxify - Rid your body and colon of any accumulated toxins

  3. Regulate - keep your digestive system consistently moving out waste regularly and completely

  4. Relieve Digestive Issues - stop discomfort from symptoms like gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, etc.

  5. Re-Balance and Restore - put your gut flora back into balance, with probiotics and prebiotics.

What to Look for in a Good Plant-Based Colon Cleanse Formulation

  1. Fiber - The wave of muscles that move waste through your digestive tract is called peristalsis. Fiber is essential to this process. Low fiber diets often lead to constipation, which can lead to other health issues.

Good sources of fiber in a colon cleanse product include psyllium husk and oat. These both also help cleanse (sweep out) the colon, and add bulk to your stool.

  2. Aloe vera leaf - Of all plants, aloe vera is considered the plant with the most medicinal qualities on Earth. Included in its many powerful healing properties:

    1. Acts as an anti-inflammatory

    2. Inhibits fungi, bacteria, and viruses

    3. Promotes tissue healing (externally and internally)

    4. Has antitumor and anti-cancer properties

    5. Contains anthraquinones which act as a laxative

    6. Promotes regularity by increasing water content in the intestines and supporting peristalsis

    7. Strengthens your immune system, including antioxidant activity

  3. Alfalfa leaf -  Alfalfa is a powerful source of nutrients, minerals and even protein. It is rare in that it has an unusually high level of Vitamin K (14% of RDI) and has been used for centuries to help support a variety of conditions. Alfalfa also contains a wonderful range of enzymes that reduce flatulence (gas) and help digestion.

  4. Rhubarb root - The stem and roots of the rhubarb plant are well known to help with digestive issues. Specifically, it eases pain from constipation and hemorrhoids and helps relieve heartburn, stomach pain and diarrhea. Rhubarb root promotes regularity.

  5. Gentian root - As the name suggests, this is another root; this time from a bright blue flowering plant. Gentian root is considered an herb (medicinal plant). It has a history of use for relief from all manner of digestive issues, including gas, gastritis, heartburn, diarrhea, and more.

  6. Cascara sagrada bark - This shrub has been used by Native Americans for millennia as a digestive aid. In fact, its name means sacred bark. It contains anthraquinone that helps relieve constipation and thoroughly clears out the colon.

  7. Goldenseal root - This medicinal plant has been used for centuries in the West (including homeopathic tinctures) and for thousands of years in both Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.

Historically, goldenseal has been used for an array of digestive issues, including relief from constipation, gas, bloating, peptic ulcers, colitis, hemorrhoids, gastritis, and stomach pain and cramping.

One of its most powerful and well studied medicinal components in goldenseal root is berberine. Berberine helps combat inflammation, parasites, bacteria (bad ones, like E. coli), viruses and fungi, promotes a healthy metabolism ... among many other benefits. It can even stop the spread and growth of cancer.

  8. Buckthorn bark - This plant contains anthraquinones, which support peristalsis - stimulating intestinal muscles. This keeps you regular and cleans out your colon.

  9. Bentonite - This is actually a type of clay that has been used as an internal medicine for centuries. The healing properties of bentonite have been studied a lot, and proven benefits include:

    1. Acting as a detoxifying agent and antibiotic

    2. Treating several causes of diarrhea (virus infection, food allergy, spastic colitis, mucous colitis, and food poisoning)

    3. Relieves constipation

    4. Contributes to a healthy balance of gut flora

  10. Lactobacillus acidophilus - When the “good” bacteria in your gut are overpowered by toxins or “bad” bacteria, your gut (microbiome) is said to be out of balance. This imbalance in your gut flora (microbiota) can lead to several health conditions, including depression and anxiety.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a strain of probiotic that can help you put your microbiome back into balance, which in turn helps your digestive system function at its best.  Including it in your colon cleanse will ensure any microflora flushed out is replenished.
